NHS Costs

There are three standard charges for NHS dental treatments. The three bands (see below) make it easy to know how much you may need to pay for the care you receive.

  • Band 1

An examination, diagnosis (eg X-rays), advice on how to prevent future problems and a scale and polish, if necessary.

This level of treatment is £21.60 in England and £14.00 in Wales.

Urgent treatment also falls under Band 1.

  • Band 2

Band 2 covers everything listed in Band 1, as well as any further treatment like fillings, root canal work or extractions.

The charge for this level of treatment is £59.10 in England and £45.00 in Wales.

  • Band 3

Finally, Band 3 covers everything in Bands 1 and 2, but includes crowns, dentures or bridges.

The charge for Band 3 treatments is £256.50 in England and £195.00 in Wales.

Please note that a different pricing structure operates under Health Service dentistry in Northern Ireland and the NHS in Scotland.

All charges apply to an overall course of treatment and not the individually listed items. You’ll only have to pay one charge for each course of treatment, even if you need to visit your dentist more than once to finish it.

Some people, such as children younger than 18 and pregnant women, are exempt from any charge at all. Ask any of our staff members for more information before your treatment.

There are certain treatments – including those deemed to be cosmetic, like white fillings and crowns – that are not routinely available on the NHS. However, NHS patients can benefit from our full range of dental care privately if it’s not covered. Just speak to your Bupa Dental Care dentist about the range of options we have available.
