• Andrew Sleigh

    Clinical Director GDC Reg No: 79306 | BChD (Leeds) (Eng) 2001 PGDip Endodontics (Chester)

    Originally from Bristol, Andrew now lives in Exmouth with his wife and his son. After qualifying from Leeds Dental School in 2001, he held a number of dental jobs around the country, gaining a wealth of experience.

    Andrew has completed further qualifications in advanced restorative dentistry and has a special interest in cosmetic dentistry using before and after photographs. He has a Postgraduate Diploma in Endodontics (root fillings) and is working towards his Masters Degree. Andrew is a member of the British Endodontic Society and he also works closely with our implant expert Phil Bennett to restore implants cases.

    He always takes his time with his patients, ensuring that he provides gentle dentistry in a relaxed manner. You can read about Andrew in the December edition of Exeter Living Magazine.

  • Alexandra Griffin

    Dentist GDC Reg No: 74678 | BDS(London) 1998 MFDS RCS(Eng) MSc in Orthodontics(Warwick)

    Alex graduated from The London Hospital Medical and Dental school in 1998 and after completing her vocational training she was appointed as a Senior House Officer in Oral Maxillofacial Surgery at The Royal Surrey Hospital, Guildford.

    She gained her Fellowship in Dental Surgery postgraduate qualification in 2001.

    Following this she moved to Australia to work in Westmead Hospital, rotating between Oral surgery, Paediatric Dentistry and Forensic Dentistry. This gave her a great deal of experience with nervous patients and treatment with sedation. Alex then became involved with teaching the students and nurses before entering into private practice.

    On returning to the UK she has continued to work in Private Practice and she gained a special interest in Orthodontics, and prevention and management of Dental Trauma. She completed an MSc in Orthodontics (with Merit) from Warwick University in 2016, and she has maintained her affiliation with Warwick University as a Honorary Clinical Teaching Fellow.
    When not working with our fabulous team, Alex also works as a Specialty Doctor in Orthodontics at the Royal Devon and Exeter hospital.

    In her spare time, Alex is very keen on sports but mainly snowboarding, for which she gained her instructor qualification in Canada in 2003.

  • Ruairi Cunnane

    Dentist GDC Reg No: 212457 | BSc (UCD), BDS (Peninsula Dental School), MJDF RCS (Eng), Dip Con Sed (Ncl), Msc Imp Dent (Bristol)

    Ruairi graduated with an Honours BSc degree in Biochemistry from University College Dublin, and then went on to study Dentistry at Peninsula College of Medicine and Dentistry.

    Ruairi has worked in general practice in Devon and also as a Senior House Officer in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Royal Devon and Exeter NHS Foundation. his interests are in implant dentistry. He also has experience treating very anxious patients using sedation and is committed to providing gentle dentistry. He understands that it is important to build a long-lasting patient relationship with his patients, helping them to achieve a smile they are proud to wear.

    Ruairi completed a diploma in conscious sedation in 2015 at the University of Newcastle achieving the gold standard for education and training in conscious sedation in the UK.

    He has recently gained a Masters Degree in Dental Implantology at the University of Bristol with distinction. He is a member of the International team of Implantology (ITI) and the Association of Dental Implantology (ADI) and regularly attends implant conferences to stay up to date with latest developments in this field.

    He is a member of the British Dental Association (BDA), Association Dental implantology (ADI), Society for the Advancement of Anaesthesia in Dentistry(SAAD) and the Joint Dental Faculties at The Royal College of Surgeons of England.

    Ruairi has maintained strong links with Peninsula Dental School since graduating and currently works there as a clinical supervisor. Outside of work Ruairi enjoys running, golf and rugby; as well as cooking, travelling and spending time with his friends and family.

  • James Hall

    Dentist GDC Reg No: 69491 | BDS (Birm) 1993 BSc (UCD), BDS (Peninsula Dental School), MJDF RCS (Eng), Dip Con Sed (Ncl), Msc Imp Dent (Bristol) 

    Originally from the Midlands, Jim qualified from Birmingham Dental School in 1993 before moving to Wales to begin a career in general practice.

    With over 20 years experience in private and NHS practice, including 15 years as a practice owner, he recently moved to Devon after his children moved to the area for education.

    Throughout his time in practice, he has been committed to providing patients with great service and quality care, and is looking forward to building new relationships with the great patients at The Exeter Dental Centre.

  • Joanna Sutcliffe

    Dentist GDC Reg No: 70622 | BDS (Hons) MFGDP DPDS 1995

    Qualifying in 1995 from Bristol, Jo has recently joined us and brings with her 20 years of experience and skill in preventive dentistry aimed at reducing decay and gum disease for individuals and families, the management of complex dental needs, including dental implants along with sedation techniques to help anxious patients.

    Joanna strives for excellence in her field and believes in working with you and the whole dental team to achieve a healthy mouth that will last for many years helping to keep your natural teeth for as long as possible. She can provide you with comprehensive care for all your needs, in particular sedation for anxious patients, complex ‘mouth rebuilds’ , cosmetic treatments and implants. Her key message is about building a relationship centred around mutual trust and respect to ensure you receive individually tailored treatment of the highest calibre.

    She has recently been awarded a Diploma in Dental implants with distinction and is on the second year of her Masters degree in Restorative Dentistry. She is a clinical supervisor for the dental students at Peninsula Dental School.

    Outside of work, Joanna enjoys keeping fit, walking, gardening and taking care of her chickens in her Dartmoor home with her husband and daughter.

  • Andrew Robertson

    Dentist GDC Reg No: 251824 | BSc (Hons), BDS (Hons) Peninsula 2014

    Qualifying in 2014, Andrew has recently joined the team at The Exeter Dental Centre. Born in Scotland, he grew up in Wiltshire before making Devon his home. Before dentistry he studied Biochemistry at the University of Warwick, and graduated with first class honours. He soon realised however that teeth and gums were far more interesting so moved to Devon to study at Peninsula Dental School, where he graduated with honours and won four end-of-year awards. Andy enjoys all aspects of general practice dentistry, with a particular interest in restorative techniques.

  • Hilary Cooke

    Dentist GDC Reg No: 69126 | BDS (Witwatersrand) (1988) MDent (Witwatersrand) (1994)

    Hilary is our resident periodontal specialist here at The Exeter Dental Centre.

    With years of experience treating patients with gum disease, from surgical to regenerative procedures, she will work with our patients to diagnose and control all types of advanced gum disease.

    Dr Hilary Cooke has over 25 years’ experience as a dentist and Specialist in treating gum disease. She is registered as a Specialist in Periodontics with the General Dental Council London and has lectured widely in South Africa and the United Kingdom. Hilary relocated to Scotland in 1996 and was based at the University of Dundee. A year later she moved to the West Country and established a Periodontal Referral Centre, accepting referrals from all counties in the south west.

    Prior to joining the Exeter Dental Centre, Hilary was lead clinician at the School of Clinical Dentistry, University of Sheffield Outreach training programme based in Chesterfield. Hilary is a member of many professional bodies including the British Society of Periodontology, The European Federation of Periodontology and the American Academy of Periodontology.

    Before returning to the UK, she was a member of the Academic Staff of the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg where she was Specialist/Consultant in Periodontics and Oral Medicine.

    Hilary is now our resident in-house Periodontist and brings with her a wealth of experience and knowledge of periodontal profiles. She has a special interest in aesthetic reconstructive periodontal procedures enabling enhancement of a confident smile and since June 2014, she has been employed by the University of Plymouth as a Clinical Supervisor based at the Peninsular Dental School in Truro.


  • Janeen Mitchell

    Hygienist GDC Reg No: 6066 | Dip Dent Hygiene RCS (Edinburgh) (Eng) 2002

    Jan Mitchell trained as a dental nurse in the Royal Navy and was then selected to undergo dental hygiene training.

    She has been practicing in the Devon area for over ten years, building up a loyal client base who appreciate her thoroughness and passion for her work.

  • Laura McCarthy

    Hygienist GDC Reg No: 140398 | BSc Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy Teesside University 2014

    Laura qualified from Teesside University with BSc Hons Degree in Dental Hygiene & Therapy in 2014. She holds a caring, gentle and sympathetic manner and is a strong believer in preventative dentistry. Laura is known to her colleagues as a perfectionist and for her upbeat and bubbly personality.

    Nikki qualified as a Dental Hygienist in 2016 from Bristol. Whist motivating her patients, she is gentle and sympathetic.

  • Kim Strawbridge

    Lead Dental Nurse GDC Reg No: 132937 | National Certificate NEBDN (Eng)

    Kim is our Lead Dental Nurse. She ensures that our high standards are maintained by the whole clinical team.

    Kim started working at the practice in 1998 and enjoys welcoming existing and new patients. Kim is associate dentist Andrew Sleigh’s dedicated nurse and their main areas of interest are endodontics (root fillings), cosmetic dentistry and the restoration of implants.

  • Laura Dudley

    After qualifying, Laura has been adding to her role with various training courses and is now our deputy lead dental nurse. Laura has trained in the Obagi Medical Products skincare system, as well as being able to offer patients the Obagi Blue Peel Radiance.

    Outside of the practice Laura enjoys spending time with family and friends, as well as holidaying!

  • Jodie Turner

    Jodie is our dedicated orthodontics Dental Nurse, assisting Dr Alex Griffin to improve patients’ smiles. Together they make a friendly team to put even the most anxious patient at ease.

    She is also a member of the team leaders, as Deputy Lead Dental Nurse.

  • Amanda Mountford

    Dental Nurse GDC Reg No: 195558 | National Certificate NEBDN (Eng) 2010

    Amanda, who has been nursing for more than four years, is a bubbly member of Team EDC.

    Working with the clinical team, Amanda is always a friendly face in surgery. She works alongside our dentist Dr Andrew Robertson, as well as taking an interest in dental implants.

    In her spare time, Amanda uses her qualification in fitness instructing to motivate friends and family members to keep fit and lead a healthy lifestyle.

  • Chloe Tarr

    Dental Nurse GDC Reg No: 233922 | National Certificate NEBDN (Eng) 2011

    Chloe joined us in January 2014. She has been nursing since April 2010 and qualified in November 2011. Chloe is a valued member of our team and is always a smiley face for patients.

    Chloe works alongside our Implantologist Dr Phil Bennett and his lead nurse Rachael Redstone, as well as treatment coordinating for our in-house periodontist Dr Hilary Cooke.

    Outside of work Chloe enjoys spending time with her friends and dog Arnie!

  • Mylie Champion

    Dental Nurse

    Mylie joined the team as an apprentice dental nurse at Exeter College almost two years ago.

    Working alongside our clinical team, Mylie has developed her nursing skills and is now a fully qualified dental nurse. She is a valued member of Team EDC and works alongside our Specialist Periodontist Hilary Cooke, as well as the rest of the team.

    Dental Nurse

    Jessica is our newest addition to Team EDC. A fully qualified dental nurse, she works with all of our dentists and has experience in dental implant and sedation nursing.

    Jess is calm and kind with patients, and already a valued member of the team.
