Dental Crowns (Caps)

Crowns are often suggested to restore a tooth that has been extensively damaged or weakened and is now unsuitable just to be filled. They provide a seamless finish, resulting in a tooth that functions and feels like a normal one should.  Your dentist will thoroughly explain how a crown will work, making sure that your bespoke treatment plan is 100% clear and convenient for you.

What is a crown?

A crown is a type of artificial tooth topper or cap, which sits over and around the tooth that has experienced damage. The crown is made to fit perfectly, covering the entire tooth and in many cases to create a natural-looking finish.

Crowns can be created from one, or a combination of, the following materials - your dentist will detail the benefits of each type, and recommend an option that meets your requirements:

  • Porcelain
  • Zirconia
  • Metal alloy
  • Gold

How does a crown work?

Just as with a filling, your dentist will at first remove the damaged or weakened parts of your tooth. Once removed, the tooth will be prepared to host the crown. At this stage an accurate impression of the tooth will be taken - this will be sent off to a laboratory where a highly skilled clinician will make the crown bespoke to fit your tooth. Your dentist will then fit the crown to the tooth in question, ensuring it fits comfortably alongside the rest of your teeth.

Your dentist will be able to provide tailored advice on which type of crown will be the best choice for you, taking into account your personal preferences as well as your treatment needs.

A dental crown offers a longer lasting solution to a damaged or weakened tooth. With proper care and attention, they can continue to be an ideal solution for many years – which is where we need your help. Your dentist will advise you on the best ways to make sure that your dental hygiene stays in good condition, and that you always feel completely confident in your smile.
