Why book a hygiene appointment with your check-up?

It’s time for a fresh start - our hygienists can professionally cleanse your mouth, removing any unwanted plaque and tartar to leave you with a clean and healthy smile. Hygiene treatment can also address any discolouration of the teeth, to leave your smile looking brighter.

Your hygienist is specifically trained to give oral care advice that’s bespoke to your smile, in areas such as gum disease, diet, tooth decay and staining.

Combined with looking after your teeth and gums at home, regular hygiene treatments will greatly improve both the appearance of your teeth and your overall oral health, as well as helping to prevent future dental issues from arising.

Book your dental check-up online today.

During your new patient check-up, there'll be plenty of opportunities to ask your dentist any questions about your dental wellbeing, and to discuss any treatments you may be considering.

What is the purpose of a dental check-up?

Having regular check-ups with your dentist can help to determine any changes in your dental health, as well as spot any signs of decay as they appear.

Your dentist will also be able to arrange treatment for any issues that may present themselves, helping to avoid lengthy and sometimes more complicated treatments in the future.

What happens during my visit?

Your dentist will start by taking a full medical history, to make sure there aren't any pre-existing health conditions they should be aware of (such as allergies, or any medication that may have an effect on your dental health). In most cases this is not an issue, but your dentist needs to know everything before we start.

During your visit, your dentist will take a look at the health of your entire mouth, including your teeth, gums and jaws.

Moving on, your dentist will be on the look-out for any issues with your teeth, such as a build-up of plaque, decay, cracks, fillings that may need attention, tooth wear and crowding or mal-position.

You may not know this, but your dentists will also check for any signs of more serious conditions such as oral cancer.

In addition to the above, the rest of your mouth will also be checked for abscesses or other signs of trauma, as well as looking at your jaw and how your upper and lower teeth fit together.

X-rays may be required to give more information about any areas of concern, and will only be taken if necessary.

How will my dentist decide if I need further treatment?

During your consultation, your dentist will be looking at three factors - the health, the function and the aesthetics of your mouth. Upon assessment, your dentist may recommend certain treatments that fit within one of these categories, as follows:

Treatments to maintain the health of your teeth:

  • Fillings
  • Hygiene
  • Periodontal care (of the gums and jaw bones)
  • Root canal treatment
  • Extractions
  • Crowns
  • Preventative care

Treatments to improve the way that your teeth function, or prevent damage:

  • Replacing teeth through dental implants, bridges or dentures
  • Orthodontic procedures to realign teeth
  • Splints to improve jaw function e.g. if you grind your teeth
  • Sports guards

Treatments to improve the aesthetics of your smile:

  • Teeth whitening
  • Orthodontics (teeth straightening)
  • Gum reshaping
  • Veneers
  • Crowns

As with all treatments at our practices, our professional dentists will only recommend those that are suitable for you, creating a bespoke treatment plan to help you achieve the smile you desire, while ensuring healthy teeth and gums.
