All about Invisalign treatment
What is Invisalign treatment?
Invisalign treatment uses a series of virtually invisible, custom-made aligners that gradually straighten your teeth without using any metal wires or brackets. The aligners (which look like clear retainers) are removable, so you can take them out when eating and brushing your teeth.
How do Invisalign aligners work?
Over the course of your treatment, you will be given a set of custom-made, removable aligners that look a bit like retainers. The aligners gradually shift your teeth using thermoplastic material.
Aligners are changed roughly every two weeks to keep the straightening process going and must be worn 20 to 22 hours a day. They should only be removed when eating or brushing your teeth. If they aren’t worn enough, treatment won’t be as effective.
The average Invisalign treatment takes around 12 to 18 months but varies on a case by case basis. Before your treatment starts, your orthodontist will be able to show you a digital representation of how your teeth should look once you finish your treatment.
What will my treatment involve?
Our handy step-by-step guide below takes you through having Invisalign treatment, including your initial consultation, your virtual treatment plan and your finished result!
- Visit your Bupa Dental Care dentist
At your first appointment, we’ll help you decide your course of treatment. The dentist will take bite impressions of your teeth and send them to Invisalign.
- Making your aligners
Invisalign treatment uses 3D imaging technology to transform your bite impressions into a custom-made series of clear and removable aligners. There may be as many as 48 in the series or as few as 12, depending on your requirement.
- Receive your aligners
During your next visit to your Bupa Dental Care dentist, you will receive your first set of aligners. Your dentist will probably give you a few additional sets for you to wear before you return for your next visit.
- Wear your aligners
You’ll wear each set of the aligners for about two weeks, removing them only to eat, drink, brush and floss. You’ll need to visit your dentist every six weeks to check that your treatment is progressing as planned. The total treatment time averages from 12 to 18 months.
- Finish your treatment
Your treatment ends when you have worn each set of aligners. To help keep your bright new smile, you will wear retainers at night for six months, and then usually a few times a week as instructed by your dentist.
How could I benefit from Invisalign braces?
Unlike traditional braces, Invisalign aligners are virtually invisible, so it’s barely noticeable that you’re having your teeth straightened. Some people are put off by traditional braces because of the look and feel of wires and brackets, so clear aligners offer a subtler alternative.
If you’re not sure about Invisalign aligners but are still interested in straightening your teeth with orthodontic treatment, your dentist or orthodontist can talk you through all the available treatment options for you during an initial consultation.

How much does Invisalign treatment cost?
The cost of Invisalign treatment varies on a case by case basis. Treatments start from roughly £1,500 and can go up to £5,000 depending on the type of Invisalign system you need and the problems you have. To get an accurate quote, you’ll need to go for a consultation with a dentist who is trained to provide Invisalign treatment.
