How does the nation feel about missing teeth?
In a nationwide survey of 1000 adults we found that almost half of Brits are unhappy with their smile, with many of those surveyed claiming they’d avoid having their photo taken due to how their teeth look, and some avoiding smiling altogether.
The research highlighted some interesting national trends:
- Those living in London and the South East had the fewest missing teeth, but people in Wales were happiest with their smile
- People in Northern Ireland had the most missing teeth and, perhaps unsurprisingly, they were also the least happy with their smiles
- Those living in the North East were the most likely to avoid public speaking as a result of being unhappy with their teeth
The importance of good dental care
Unfortunately, neglecting your regular dental check-ups can have serious consequences, with over 50% of those surveyed citing ‘not looking after their teeth’ as their biggest health regret.
Eddie Coyle, head of clinical operations here at Bupa Dental Care said, “Sadly, the findings are not surprising for me. We see many patients who lack confidence in themselves because of their missing teeth. Poor oral hygiene can have long lasting consequences, such as tooth decay, gum disease or even tooth loss… prevention is always the best approach."
At Bupa Dental Care, we’re on a mission to get the nation smiling again. So what are your options if you’ve lost one or more teeth?
A permanent solution
Eddie Coyle continued, “It’s so sad to think about how many people spend most of their life feeling unhappy about their smiles, when there really is no need to suffer in silence. Luckily, we have been seeing an increase in patients with missing teeth requesting longer-lasting solutions, such as dental implants.”
What are dental implants?
Dental implants are a strong, reliable and long-lasting solution to tooth-loss, lasting for over 20 years with proper care; and as each implant is bespoke, it’s a natural, long-term option for tooth loss.
Implants consist of small titanium screws, which replace the root of the tooth with a stable and secure base, they can help to restore the function of your teeth, giving you the freedom to enjoy the foods that may have once caused you problems.
This root replacement also helps to preserve your jawbone, which may otherwise begin to shrink, causing changes in your facial structure.
