Hygienist Treatment It is likely that when you attend an examination with your dentist, he or she may refer you to a hygienist for further treatment. This is especially likely if you have gum problems or your teeth require cleaning. Dental hygienists are Dental Care Professionals (DCPs) who work as part of your practice’s clinical team. Their work focuses on the treatment and control of periodontal disease (gum disease) and dental caries (tooth decay). A hygienist will also offer you advice on how to maintain good oral health, recommend suitable products for you to use, and give you nutritional advice on how to prevent your condition from advancing further. |

Every hygienist that works for Oasis is fully qualified with a Diploma in ‘Dental Hygiene’ or a 'Degree in ‘Oral Health Science’, awarded from an approved hospital, university or training collage. During their study, a dental hygienist must cover a range of topics, such as: dental anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, diet and nutrition, preventive treatment, infection control and dental health education. All hygienists are fully trained in ways to make your visit as comfortable as possible, and will have completed a considerable amount of ‘on-the-job’ study in various dental clinics before graduation. Hygienists have commonly also qualified as dental nurses prior to becoming a dental hygienist.
A hygienist is required by law to register with the statutory body, the General Dental Council (GDC), and is regulated under this organisation. Currently the law dictates that a hygienist may only carryout treatment on you that has been specifically instructed by your dentist. As a result, you must always attend a full dental examination before you can be eligible to visit your hygienist.
